Pilonidal Disease
This is an inflammatory condition affecting the skin in the midline between the buttocks. A pilonidal cyst is a collection of hair and debris in a pit or small tunnel. It can get infected and may cause an abscess.
Causes
The cause of this condition is not clearly understood. Cysts may result in some discomfort, redness, or discharge between the buttocks. Infection of the cyst might require antibiotics; at times this could progress to an abscess that might require surgery to relieve the infection.
Treatment
Repeated episodes of discomfort, discharge, infections or abscess might warrant an assessment. Treatment can vary from minor excision to full-thickness excision and a flap.
