Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus.

They can be aggravated by various factors, including straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, pregnancy, and sitting for prolonged periods on the toilet. These conditions can increase pressure on the veins in the rectal area, leading to symptoms such as bleeding, a palpable lump, pain, itch or discomfort.

Importantly, these symptoms can mask or mimic many serious bowel conditions.
It is essential to have any new symptoms properly assessed.

Treatment Options

Treatment options for haemorrhoids depend on the severity of the symptoms. In mild cases, lifestyle changes and stool softeners may alleviate symptoms. For more persistent or severe cases, there are several surgical options available.

Increasing fibre intake, staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged sitting or straining during bowel movements.

Specific stool softeners or osmotic laxatives may be advised and topical ointments may assist with symptoms in the short term.

A rubber band is placed around the base of the haemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, causing it to shrink and fall off, this is a common procedure.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a chemical solution into the haemorrhoid to shrink it.

Infrared coagulation uses heat to shrink the haemorrhoid, while haemorrhoidectomy surgically removes the swollen veins.
