Diverticular Disease
Diverticular disease involves the formation of small pouches, called diverticula, in the wall of the colon.
These pouches can become inflamed or infected, leading to a condition known as diverticulitis. Diverticular disease is often associated with a low-fibre diet, which can contribute to constipation and increased pressure in the colon, leading to the formation of diverticula.
The majority of individuals with diverticular disease remain asymptomatic.
Diverticulitis can cause abdominal pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits, and rectal bleeding as well as systemic features, including fever, chills, nausea, and vomiting.

Importantly, these symptoms can mask or mimic many serious bowel conditions, including bowel cancer. It is essential to have any new symptoms properly assessed.
Treatment & Prevention
Treatment for diverticular disease depends on the severity of symptoms.
During acute episodes of diverticulitis, treatment may involve antibiotics to treat infection and pain management to alleviate discomfort. In some cases, a clear liquid diet or temporary bowel rest may be recommended to allow the colon to heal. Severe or recurrent cases of diverticulitis may require hospitalisation and possibly surgery to remove the affected portion of the colon.
Preventive measures for diverticular disease include maintaining a high-fibre diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. A colonoscopy may also be required/recommended to rule out any occult conditions that might mimic diverticulitis.
